Baked beans are a classic staple. This recipe is a healthy and nutritious take on baked beans, with plump butter beans as the star ingredient. “Healthy”, no added sugar, baked beans; this recipe works for a main course, as a side dish, or even for breakfast. To make this recipe you assemble a delicious tomato sauce and then add butter-beans to finish the dish.”

 Healthy Baked Beans


  • 1 small onion, peeled and diced
  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 400g Chopped Tomatoes
  • 1 Tbsp Ketchup
  • 400g Butter Beans
  • Sprig of thyme
  • 10-15 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • To serve: bread or toast

 Healthy Baked Beans


1. In a pot, add the oil and onion and sauté for about 5-8 minutes on low heat.

2. Add the garlic cloves, plum tomatoes, tomato purée and fresh thyme to the pot. Simmer on a low heat for about 20-25 mins, reducing the tomatoes to a rich sauce.

3. Stir in the cherry tomatoes and butter beans for 5-10 minutes.

4. Remove the springs of thyme. Find the garlic cloves, mash them up and stir back into the beans.

5. Serve with crusty bread, or slices of toast.
